Recommended seatposts, instructions on how to choose

The “seat post” that is inserted into the frame and used to support the saddle. It is also known as the seat post or saddle support, and as the part that allows you to adjust the height of the saddle.

It’s also popular because it’s a custom bike part that can be replaced relatively easily. However, there is a wide variety of products offered by different manufacturers, so it can be difficult to decide which one to buy. So this time, I will introduce you to the recommended seatposts.

Seat post diameter varies from product to product. Products are available in various sizes such as 26.8mm, 27.2mm, 31.6mm, etc. When purchasing, please choose the model that fits your bike.

To check the diameter of the seatpost, it is recommended that the one being used be removed from the frame once. The seatpost diameter is usually printed on the inner part of the frame, so please check it.

Also, regarding the length of the seatpost, please choose the same size as the model you are basically using. The seatpost should be in the frame by a certain amount. Especially, if it is too short, it may damage the frame and seat post, so be careful.

Check how easy it is to adjust the angle

You can adjust the angle of the yagura part that connects the saddle to the seat post. There is the type that uses one bolt to fix the saddle and the type that uses two bolts, but basically both angles can be adjusted with a hex wrench.

There are two types of angle-adjustable seatposts, one with grooves in both the yagura and the post, and the other without grooves. The type with grooves can adjust the angle according to the position of the groove, and the type without grooves can be adjusted steplessly.

Check offset

A saddle mount called yagura is usually installed on the upper part of the seat post. yagula is called offset whether it is directly above the seat post or slightly behind the seat post. If the yagula is directly above the seatpost, the offset is zero.

Please note that if the offset changes, the saddle position will also change. With a rearward offset seatpost, the saddle will also move backwards. If you feel cramped on the bike you are currently using, or if you want to enjoy a long ride in comfort, then adopt it.

Check type

Normal

Ordinary type seatposts for general bicycles. Road bikes tend to use carbon materials that are light in weight and have excellent vibration absorption, but there are also many products made of aluminum that can be purchased at relatively reasonable prices.

Various models are sold in 0.2mm diameter increments for regular seatposts, and the lineup is extensive. Choose the size that best suits the bike you own.

With suspension

The seatpost with suspension has a built-in spring. It is attractive because it has cushioning properties and can effectively absorb the impact from the road.

Many models with suspension have a seatpost diameter of 27.2 mm, and in some cases, shims are required for installation. Keep this in mind beforehand.

For BMX

Many seatposts designed for BMX use a pivot system with a bolt in the center of the saddle.

The advantage of BMX seatposts that use a pivot system is the ability to use a saddle without rails. Not only can you expect a weight reduction, but it is also attractive with its damage-resistant construction.

However, seatposts with the Pivotal System must be used with the same Pivotal System compatible saddle. Check it out in advance.

Check the material

Aluminum

Seatposts made of aluminum are characterized by the ability to be purchased at a relatively reasonable price. They are recommended if you want to customize your bike while keeping costs as low as possible. A model weighing about 300 to 400 grams is common.

Although it is heavier than a carbon seatpost, it has a high resistance to tightening, which is attractive. This type is recommended when you change the height of the seatpost frequently.

Carbon

The seatpost is made of “carbon”, which is characterized by its light weight and excellent ride comfort. Carbon seatposts are mainly for models weighing 100-200g. It is about 100 grams lighter than aluminum.

In addition, it is easier to firmly absorb the impact from the road than other materials.

Titanium

The seatpost is made of titanium, which has excellent strength. Although it is heavier than seatposts made of aluminum or carbon, it has high durability and corrosion resistance, and can be used with force.

There are also many titanium seatposts with luxurious designs. This type is recommended when you want to focus on both the appearance and performance of your bike.
